Becoming as Free as a Bird

In western societies we are allowed a wide spectrum of choice in making life's decisions. Like birds, our boundaries can be unlimited. We may soar to the heavens and beyond because our freedom can manifest in any form we choose. The variations of self-expression are vast, and to experiment with this vastness is what we are here for. It's not the outcome that matters, but the journey through experience itself that is important.

Living in a free society may allow for greater experimentation with self-expression, but if the mind is imprisoned, no physical place can liberate us no matter how "free" it is. That is why we must concentrate on freeing the mind from preconceived ideas and archaic belief systems that keep us trapped.

Because most of us are creatures of habit, it is easy to unconsciously choose ideas that imprison rather than liberate us. Our fears are so great that they control how we think and behave. Becoming conscious and expanding our awareness is the key to transcending these fears and false beliefs. This is not an easy task because we have become comfortable with these beliefs and the mind does not want to let them go. These false beliefs are like the sound of a scratched record repeating over and over what has become ingrained.

The way to freedom is opened by understanding that we are not our mind or our thoughts. Our hearts are naturally open, but it’s thoughts that create paranoia and close the heart. The trust we have in the mind (thoughts) has continually worked against us. The mind is not a trustworthy friend, but instead constantly deceives us. If we truly realized this, we would not rely on the mind for truth. It's our soul's awareness that is connected to all truth and this is what we must reunite with. We must let our soul guide our thoughts and actions, which will then free the mind of its antiquated belief systems.

What must we do to create this reunion with our soul? First, we must realize that the soul is our link to God and the essence of who we are. It is never born and never dies, but is eternal. Our soul has the same qualities as God. Most of us have lost the awareness of this because we believe that we are the mind rather than the soul. Consciousness is waiting for us to realize our true nature. Unlike the mind, it will not force anything upon us. Instead, it waits for us to take the first step.

The soul is the foundation of who we are, not the mind. The deeper we go within, and the more silent we become, the easier it is to feel and know our “soul essence,” which is one with God. We may connect with our soul through many different techniques and qualities, such as: meditation, contemplation, prayer, silence, dreams, therapy, opening the heart, bodywork, love, service, compassion, generosity, and honesty.

We must diligently work to incorporate all of these techniques and qualities into our daily lives. We cannot allow laziness, indifference, or fear to deter our commitment. We cannot let wrongdoings from the past, reluctance in the present, or false expectations for the future discourage us. Our hearts and souls want us to rediscover who we really are. Aren't you curious to know your true being?

I invite you to know yourself and to love yourself. For eventually, no matter how many lives we might live, we will learn to know, like I do, the incredible, beautiful, perfect, and free beings that we truly are.
